In the Western Hemisphere, macramé is believed to have originated with 13th-century Arabic weavers. These artisans knotted the excess thread and yarn along the edges of hand-loomed fabrics into decorative fringes on bath towels, shawls, and veils. The Spanish word macramé is derived from the Arabic migramah (مقرمة), believed to mean “spiritual towel”, “ornamental friend” or “embroidered veil.” After the Moorish conquest, the art was taken to Spain, and off to sea once more then spread through Europe. It was introduced into England at the court of Mary II in the late 17th century.

Sailors made macramé a first mate and became deeply intertwined in off hours while at sea. They sold or bartered it when they landed in sea shanty villages.  With no mid continental pass the ships had to sail around South America. The craft was traded up and down the South American coast.  The macrame stayed along the cost but made connections in the mountains. Tying knots and connecting with communities through out the Americas as well spreading the art to places as far as China and Africa.
Nineteenth-century British and American sailors made hammocks, bell fringes, and belts from the influence and effect the macrame had made on them. They called the process “square knotting” after the knot the macramé used most frequently. In this modern era the macrame took to traveling, remembering its gypsy roots it became a frequent companion to many a kind hart hearted traveler. It could be seen helping to pay passages, trade for food or other needed supplies, and always moving on.
Having such a deeply connected relationship with development of human kind and remembering its early days in the desert, its soul bond with the islanders, sailing days, and many a hard road traveled the macrame began to recognize a social responsibility.
Now with connections tying bonds from Takers all the way to the Leavers the macrame is using its position of full interconnectedness to help channel resources through its strings to those most in need. Taking the form of spiritual inspiration, clean water and basic implementation, caring for children and those in need. The macrame’s String Theory  is an experimental spirituality active  framework  that attempts to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity with soulful intelligent design and a deep traditional recognition of responsibility. The-String-Theory is a contender for the theory of everything.
